I just stumbled on your blog and love it already! I hope you can help me. I am a 43 year old stay-at-home mother of two young children. Shoes are a major fashion challenge for me. My feet are wide and flat with a bunion forming on one. I have a knee problem that requires that I wear knee support on one knee and shoes with arch support, usually with inserts. My formerly perky breasts are sagging from having breast fed for so long. My waist is no longer svelt. I am still relatively thin at 136 lbs and 5'8". Assets: long legs, great hair. My foot doctor says I should always wear running shoes. Ugh! What can I do? Clothing and shoe advice please. Rachel
Dearest Rachel, First of all, kudos to you for having two darling children - I'm sure you get plenty of exercise just chasing after them all day, but one tiny little piece of advice: try to work 15 to 20 minutes of weight training into your day. It will tone your already trim figure, give you back a shapely waistline, flatten your tummy and best of all it will help prevent osteoporosis later on. Check with your doctor first, as there are some exercises which might not be good for your knee, and others which just might strengthen it.
That said, on to the truly important issues: FASHION!!! First off, check out this great website: The Healthy Foot Store. A good friend of mine told me about it (she has foot issues too) and swears by their shoes. They are sporty/stylish, comfortable and ergonomically fabulous for your feet.
For a dressier (and a bit pricier unfortunately) shoe check out Taryn Rose designs. Orthopedic surgeon-turned-shoe designer Taryn Rose has created her own line of shoes that try to resolve the argument between sensible and stylish. Colorful, pretty and very feminine.
As far as fashion goes, make the most of your assets. Show off your long legs in great designer jeans and a feminine blouse. Cropped khakis and bermuda shorts are also fabulous and look particularly great with sporty sandals. And with the weather warming up, skirts are a practical and stylish option. A tiered or full a-line skirt is a great choice because it moves with you (especially chasing those little ones at the park!), keeps you cool and shows off your gorgeous legs.
Don't forget date night! Every woman (and especially a busy mommy) deserves a night out with her significant other - to relax, recharge, and reconnect. Slip into a sassy sundress and sandals, or hot designer denim and a flattering top, slick on some lipgloss, fluff up your hair, spritz on a little scent and snap out of mommy mode and into one hot mama!
