From eco-friendly, to organic, to sustainable, to wild crafted, the labels of green products alone are enough to overwhelm the average consumer. What is the best way to beginning exploring these categories?

A beauty regimen is an excellent place to start dabbling in natural products, as the average individual slathers, lathers, rubs and sprays up to ten different skin care products on his or her body every day. This means that the average woman is exposing her skin to up to 130 chemicals in her daily beauty routine alone. As a result, women absorb up to five pounds of chemicals a year.

The founder of SpaRitual, Shel Pink recently addressed the “Women in Green” forum about the importance of becoming a conscious consumer, detailing what to look for and what to avoid in buying personal care products. Below, please find Shel’s top tips for choosing healthier products that are equally effective.

In order to find products that are truly organic (at least 70 percent), study labels for products that are Certified Organic or USDA Organic.

Look for products made with certified organic ingredients. While these products may not be 70 percent organic overall, they contain organic ingredients. Other certifications to look for include products labeled as vegan and products that are not tested on animals, signified by the leaping bunny symbol.

It is also extremely important to check the ingredient list for each product, paying special attention to the ingredients near the top of the list, as they compose the majority of the formula. Common ingredients to avoid include parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate and other preservatives.
