Best Actor nominee and Oscar host James Franco’s mother, Betsy Franco, supported a hometown talent by wearing a custom-designed Camilla Olson gown to the Academy Awards. Designer Camilla Olson hails from Franco’s hometown of Palo Alto, CA and worked closely with the actor’s mother to create a series of looks for her TV appearances and events (Oscars pre-show and “Oprah”) surrounding the awards show.
Given the increased attention on the Oscar "moms" this season, the red carpet debut marked a significant moment for the designer. Before receiving her M.F.A. at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Olson held 30 years of experience as an entrepreneur, venture capitalist and operating manager. In September 2010, Camilla Olson launched her namesake collection at the Academy of Art University Fashion Show during Spring 2011 Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week. Inspired by the movie "Blade Runner" and samurai arts, her collection represented women as rebels breaking the restrictions of their historically constrained roles. With a strong belief in socially responsible design and production, OIson uses natural methods to apply color and prints to silks and favors creative cutting techniques to eliminate fabric waste and use of toxic chemicals.
