CLOTHING "INGREDIENT" CHEAT-SHEET: Best fabric blends that wear well and keep you air conditioned naturally!

Summer is inching closer, and while we're all psyched for the perpetually warm weather ahead after a tough Winter, pretty soon it's inevitable that the heat, humidity and Summer sun will leave us feeling, well, less than fresh.

Chrissy Volk, wardrobe consultant for Adahlia Volk has put together a cheat-sheet for navigating through the best, most breatheable fabrics for the season. Who ever looks at clothing "ingredient" listings on the tag - well, this season think of it as your guide to "cool."

SUMMER FABRIC "INGREDIENTS"

DENIM

  • COTTON + STRETCH = CUTE BUTT: Cotton jeans are the lightest for summer because they are airy and breathable, however, jeans with a small content of stretch are the most flattering. They will move with your body and it’s movements.
  • BEST DENIM BLENDS: Chrissy suggests denim with a high cotton content, and small synthetic content. A jean with either a 98% cotton/2% lycra or 96 % cotton/4% Lycra fabric, is a good combination. Joe’s Jeans, Seven For all Mankind, Citizen, Gap are all great for this content!

TEES AND TANKS

  • SOFTEST TEES: Cotton tees and tanks are favored in the summer time because it is so breathable. Look for Pima and Supima Cotton - they are the softest cottons.
  • FABRIC BLENDS AND THE "WEAR" OF YOUR FAVE SHIRTS: Combination fabric blends are often used so that garments will retain shape and remain durable over a period of time. Cotton blended with polyester, for instance, will retain its shape well and will also resist shrinkage.
  • SURPRISE FABRIC TO LOOK FOR: Look for Rayon! It drapes well and keeps its shape, even when wet.
  • SLIMMING TEES AND TANKS: If you are looking for tank that holds it shape day after day, Chrissy personally love James Perse, Target, or BP a Nordstrom brand. They are a Cotton/Spandex blend so you can throw them on day after day, and they will hold their shape very well. The blend you should look for is 94% cotton, 6% spandex for a more tight fitting, yet slimming, tee or tank.

DRESSES

  • CAN'T GO WRONG AIRY DRESSES: 100% cotton is the way to go for light and airy dresses!
  • DRESSIER "DRESS"ING: For dressier occassions, ditch the polyester blends and look for 100% silk, which is more breatheable and cool! Another option could be a chiffon (which is made from either silk or nylon), which is also breatheable and light. Look for a lining in an acetate or nylon blend.
  • BODY CON OPTIONS: If you do love a tighter fit, opt for a poly-blend with Spandex, it allows for more flexibility in the fabric and pulls moisture away from the skin, making cooler than just polyester alone.

Sponsored Post: Discover Your Natural Beauty Potential

Well darling girls, winter is finally over and I think spring is here to stay! I am so ready to revel in the warmth of the sunshine and the scent of blossoming flowers. And while I usually do so with a celebratory shopping excursion to stock up on flirty sundresses and sassy sandals, this year I've decided that it's also time for a change of hairstyle. (Along with stocking up on those sundresses and sandals of course!) But what style to choose? I think I'll check out some of the latest celebrity hair styles for a bit of inspiration:

First of all, how cute is Ginnifer Goodwin's new pixie cut? Adorable! She has always been absolutely gorgeous, but this sprightly new style is perfection indeed. Very Audrey Hepburn. I love the choppiness of the cut, along with the caramel highlights. The length on top makes it so versatile! She can wear it all curly and tousled, or sleek and retro. And since we have the same hair color, perhaps this style will give me just a dash of European elan, no?

Hmm, don't know if I'm quite that brave yet. Maybe I should start small and work my way into a daring cut? Perhaps start with a choppy fringe across my forehead, a la Jessica Alba and Angelina Jolie? Leave the length so I can wear it long, loose and tousled or sleek it back into a high pony or an elegant up-do. Maybe even snip in a few layers for extra volume. Hmm, I'm liking this style more and more!

Am I ready to go all California girl and add some highlights? I love the golden blonde and rich caramel highlights that Jessica Biel is sporting these days. Her hair always looks so healthy and gorgeous, and the highlights really add dimension to her style.

One final option: don't you just love this sleek bob sported by Katie Holmes Cruise? It's my all-time favorite look for sweet Katie - so chic, stylish and elegant. Wonder if it would make me look as gorgeous as her?

One thing I know for certain, no matter what your style or color, there is nothing more flattering than healthy, shiny hair.

American Express Travel’s Nextpedition Initiative: What’s Your Travel Sign?

So this weekend I was holed up at home, updating my Facebook profile and watching the rain beat against my window, wishing I was in sunny Tuscany when I found myself on the American Express Travel Facebook page. Where I also found the Nextpedition Profiler Quiz, which of course I had to take. I love taking quizzes, especially ones that tell me how amazing, chic, stylish and adventurous I am. I mean, I already know those things about myself, but it's nice to be reminded occasionally. Anyhoo, according to my quiz results I am 95% Detourist. As opposed to a regular Tourist. A Detourist goes on a trip to see and do but isn't afraid to wander off the beaten path to see and do what others have missed out on. A Tourist may buy a pistachio gelatto while in Tuscany but a Detourist will find where the best pistachio gelatto is made, how to make it and come home with the recipe!

Interesting fact, the folks at American Express are smart enough to realize that not everyone fits into a neat little niche when it comes to travel profiles. For instance, I adore exploring quaint little villages but I love the excitement of a bustling metropolis; and while I love relaxing on a beach
with a good book and an icy beverage there is nothing I look forward to more than finding an exquisite handbag in an out-of-the way boutique. Now, I do see the Detourist in most of these activities, as did American Express, but the quiz also revealed that I have a couple of other travel profiles which fit the bill just as well: 97% Poshaholic (I adore luxury accomodations) and 95% Trengineer (I am very cutting edge, but we all know that right?)

Link
So based on your travel sign American Express helps you plan a trip according to your particular budget and travel wishes - three, four or five star. They provide you with a Travel Console, which is a Smartphone type device that's also your travel guide. It will inspire you to go places and do things you wouldn't normally do. Day by day it will reveal you itinerary, recommend cool spots to check out and allow you to easily broadcast your adventures to your followers back home. How cool is that?!

Now, while the Poshaholic in me wants to go five-star, the Trengineer in me is willing to go four-star in order to bring home a great pair of Italian strappy sandals and the Detourist in me wants to find out where exactly those sandals are made and possibly strike up an acquaintance with the designer.

So now it's your turn to take this fun quiz at American Express Travel on Facebook to decide where you want to go on your Nextpedition! And I want to hear about it so be sure to comment back!

American Express Travel announces NEXTPEDITION℠, a new way to travel targeted to travel enthusiasts in their 20's and 30's. Through NEXTPEDITION, American Express Travel offers consumers the exciting opportunity to take a vacation where the destination and itinerary are unknown until the actual journey begins and is revealed day by day via a customized Smartphone. The “mystery trip” is customized to reflect the traveler’s personality traits, providing an opportunity for him or her to explore the world in an unexpected and intuitive way.

When is it Time to Breakup With Your Makeup?

It’s Spring and there is no better time for some cleaning of your cosmetics. NYC makeup artist Susmta Patel offers some tips on when its time to say adios to your cosmetics.

Cosmetics, both skin care and makeup aren't meant to grow old with you. "Products are developed to last a year or two," says Susmta Patel. However, contamination can occur at any time, since makeup is always in contact with germ-prone areas like your eyes, mouth and fingers. In general, always toss anything that has changed color or consistency or has a bad odor. Otherwise, use these guidelines to assess the shelf life of common beauty products. Unlike food, though, cosmetics aren't required to have an expiration date on their packaging. Instead, you'll have to keep track of when you opened it. Most products have a symbol similar to this one, in which the number signifies the number of months you have until the item is no longer usable. “If you have a hard time keeping track of when you've bought things, just write down the purchase date,” suggest Susmta.

  • Most powders, concealers and lip balms are anhydrous (they don't contain water), so they can last for a couple of years, says Susmta.
  • Cleansers and moisturizers often contain fatty acids, which can turn rancid quickly. Toss after six months.
  • Multi-use products such as 3-in-1 sticks and creams can spread germs from lips to eyes and cheeks. Wipe the surface before switching areas, and discard or replace after six months.
  • Pencils can last several years unless you wet the tip with saliva or water. To be safe, sharpen before each use.
  • Mascara should be tossed after three months without fail. The tube is a breeding ground for bacteria," says Susmta.
  • Foundations can last up to a year if you keep your fingers away from the bottle. Instead, use a sponge to apply.
  • Store cosmetics in a cool, dry place outside the bathroom to extend their shelf life.
If you know how to take care of your cosmetics, your makeup should serve you well. But use common sense: If your gloss is goopy, your nail polish is separating, or your lipstick has a funny smell, it's time to bid it adieu. To see guidelines for when to replace your makeup, read on.

  • Concealer Up to 12 months.
  • Powder 2 years.
  • Cream & gel cleansers 1 year.
  • Pencil eye liner Should be sharpened regularly. Will last up to 3 years.
  • Eyeshadow Will also last up to 3 years.
  • Brushes Wash every 2-3 months in a mild detergent.
  • Sponges Wash weekly and discard monthly.
  • Foundation Check the ingredients: A water-based foundation will last up to 12 months, oil-based will last up to 18 months. You may find you need two different shades of foundation each year: One for summer when your skin is naturally darker and one for winter when you're lighter. Extra tip: If your water-based foundation dries out before its expiration date, simply add a few drops of alcohol-free toner and shake to mix it in. No need to do this to oil-based foundations. Because they contain oil, they will tend to separate. You have to shake anyway. See my list of the best foundations.
  • Lip liner Up to 3 years. Extra tip: Skip the push-up lip liners. They're expensive, tend to break and you never really know how much you have left until you run out.
  • Lipstick Some experts say 1-2 years. Others say up to 4 years. What everyone agrees on is that if it smells rancid, throw it out, it's spoiled. Extra tip: If you store lipstick in the refrigerator, it will last longer. Bonus tip: Want your lipstick to last longer during the day? Shade in lips with lip liner before applying lipstick.
  • Mascara This product expires the fastest: Throw out after 4 months. Extra tip: If you don't want your mascara to expire faster than its fresh date, don't pump the wand in and out -- you're only exposing the product to drying air.
  • Nail Polish Up to 12 months.

Sponsored Post: Get Radiant Skin With L'Oreal Go 360 Anti-Breakout Cleanser

It's been a long, long winter and I for one am thrilled that warmer weather has finally arrived! Just last week I donned a sassy new sundress and strappy sandals and actually walked to work, enjoying the fair weather and sun on my shoulders. So imagine my surprise when I was greeted at the office by one of my co-workers with a concerned look on her face, asking if I was feeling alright because I looked a bit "peaked". After a quick investigation in the ladies' room mirror (bad lighting, but still...) I realized that I did, indeed, look peaked. Peaked, pasty and dull, with the beginnings of a nasty little breakout on my chin! This girl's face was in desperate need of some serious deep cleansing to get rid of bacteria and that dry, winter pallor!
As a busy fashionista who is always on the lookout for a way to make her life easier I just love it when I find a beauty product that lives up to the hype that precedes it! I recently received a bottle of L'Oreal Go 360 Anti-Breakout Cleanser with the adorable little scrublet attached and was happy to give it a whirl.

First of all, the scent is very fresh and clean, like a bowl of fresh ripe peaches. The little scrublet is attached to the bottle (it fits into a hole in the front of the bottle - so ingenious!) and has a suction cup on the end to attach it to just about any surface if you wish. Its flexible textured surface really works up a great lather and is very gently to the skin, while also cleaning very efficiently. It removes makeup, dirt and bacteria and leaves my skin feeling squeaky clean.

After one week of using the L'Oreal Go 360 Anti-Breakout Cleanser that nasty little breakout on my chin is completely gone and I swear my pores are visibly smaller and definitely cleaner! It didn't dry out my skin and the scrublet provides just enough exfoliation to give my skin a clear, radiant glow. I think I'm in love!

NEW L’Oreal Go 360 Clean Anti-Breakout Cleanser removes acne causing bacteria in just one wash pore-by-pore! Pores look smaller and skin is cleaner, smoother and softer. It is also the winner of the 2011 Self Magazine Healthy Beauty Award for Best Acne Cleanser!

Go 360 Clean is a line of deep pore-by-pore cleansers. There are five different formulas from which to choose. Every Go 360 Clean cleanser is designed with the innovative super soft Scrublet™ to help you reach deep into every last pore for the cleanest clean.

Lace Sleeve Trend: Love it or Hate it?

I don't know about you, but I'm still trying to catch up on missing an entire night's sleep while watching the Royal Wedding. Oh, but it was worth it! From the first sightings of the hoi polloi with their haughty expressions and chic chapeaux to Pippa in that spectacular bridesmaid gown, I was positively glued to the screen. And the most highly anticipated moment for fashionistas everywhere - when Kate emerged from her hotel and stepped into the car and we all got our first glimpse of the much-guessed-about wedding dress: a fitted V-neck gown in ivory and white satin gazar with a long-sleeved lace overlay, designed by McQueen creative director Sarah Burton.

Me? I loved it. I thought it was absolute perfection. Classic, elegant, exquisite. And while we all knew that she would wear a modest gown, as all royal brides do, I for one swept away by it's simple elegance, classic styling and that fabulous embroidered skirt.

And I'm
thinking a new trend for lace sleeves is emerging.

What do you think? Lace sleeves - love it or hate it?

We’re not for everyone. So, Love us? Great. Hate us? Fine. Not sure? Undecided? Don’t care? That’s where we’ve got a problem. It’s time to get off the fence, get us on a sandwich and make a choice. Are you Miracle Whip? Pick a Side. Get a sample. Go to MiracleWhip.com
