Tame Your Tresses the Natural Way

Cutler/Redken stylist Micki Charles is here to show you how to tame your tresses with some of our old school favorites! First, repair damage caused by summer fun (read: sun, sand, and salt water) with a modern take on a classic hot oil treatment. Then, create a no-heat style that lasts with mousse – not your mother’s version.

My favorite DIY hot oil treatment can be done with ingredients you already have at home!

Step 1: Choose your favorite virgin, organic oil – coconut and almond are GREAT options.
Step 2: Add a few drops of rosemary or lavender oil to add more shine and boost the relaxation aspect of the treatment.
Step 3: Heat the oil on your stove slowly (do NOT simmer or boil, you only want it warmed up).
Step 4: Massage the warm oil into your hair and scalp. Cover with a plastic shower cap.
PRO TIP: Use only on your ends if you have finer hair.
Step 5: Leave this treatment on for at least 15 minutes and rinse with a gentle shampoo.

Mousse and gels are definitely back! They keep your hair protected from humidity and allow a degree of control when styling even during the hottest days of summer. Try my version of no-heat waves that works with the humidity and heat (not against), while keeping your locks frizz free.

Step 6: Choose the right mousse or gel for YOU. Newer formulations are lighter, better for your hair and don’t leave you with that “crunchy look”.

PRO TIP: I LOVE the Redken Stay High 18! This brand new product is a mousse to gel styler so you get the best of both.

Step 7: Towel dry hair and massage a dime-sized amount from roots to tip.
Step 8: Then, braid the lengths to add wave and movement.
Step 9: Once almost dry, take out the braid and shake loose!

Happy styling!
