How to Dress Up and Accessorize Denim

Every fashionista worth her Choos knows that a girl's go-to wardrobe staple is a fabulous pair of denim jeans. Denim is so amazingly versatile - the same pair of slouchy comfortable boyfriend jeans that you wore to the family barbecue last weekend can also make a chic fashion statement at this weekend's rock concert! So how does a girl take her denim from casual to killer in no time flat?

The first step is to add a gorgeous top - something feminine and flirty will completely offset the casualness of the denim, especially if you go with ultra feminine fabrics like silk and lace, or something with a little shine.

Next, there is nothing like a great pair of skyscrapers to give that denim the added kick it needs. I love the look of a strappy pair of metallic sandals with slouchy rolled denim. Another option would be one of the au courant shootie styles, in a killer platform.

And don't forget the power of a little bling. Accessorize with a funky chunky necklace and a stack of bangles. Finish with a chic little handbag and you are good to go!

Another great denim style that moves from day to night with style and ease is the skinny jean. Or, if skinnies aren't your style, a straightleg or bootleg style works equally well. You can dress up any of these styles with a few wardrobe basics that you probably already have in your closet!

You are going for a classic, timeless look here. Start with a basic button-down blouse or fitted white tee. Next, add a classic blazer and a pair of platform pumps - perhaps a stacked heel pump or an open-toe stiletto (patent leather works really well here). Word of caution: stay away from wedge heels as they are just a tad too casual for the look you are aiming for.

Finish with a sleek necklace, a statement cuff bracelet or bangle and a great shoulder bag and you are ready to dance the night away.

Well, there you go girls. From zero to ninety in expert style!

Fashions for the Flight Down Under

Hello - I am going to be flying to Australia in July. Do you have any ideas for a comfortable yet chic outfit for the 24 hour flight? Keep in mind, I have a 1 year old so that will be an added challenge! Plus its summer here but it will be winter there (more like New England fall weather). Thanks for your help! -Lisa

Dear Lisa,

What fun! Australia, the sunburned country (but in a good way). I adore Australia and would love to go back sometime. Anyhoo, I am familiar with the trek across the skies and here are my suggestions for travel attire:

Layer, Layer, Layer! Just like living here in the San Francisco area, you need to dress for summer and plan for winter. First of all, ditch the Juicy sweatsuit - unless you
are Kate Gosselin, but since you are traveling with just a single one-year-old I assume you aren't. Velour travel sweats are très passé -- it's definitely time to donate them to a good cause.

I would go with a pair of very comfortable jeans with a little stretch to them. Something slouchy, like the new boyfriend style denim. Add a great fitting tee shirt - perhaps something with a little feminine style to offset the slouchy jeans. Top with the au courant denim jacket or a shrunken blazer.

For footwear, go with a pair of stylish skimmers or driving mocs (super comfy!) Keep an additional tee shirt or two in your carry on bag in case of spills or baby dribbles. (As the mommy of an adorable one-year-old I am sure you have this little tidbit of advice down pat!)

The thing to remember when travelling for long periods of time is that it is very important that you be comfortable and not wear anything that is too restricting. No tight denim or cinching waistbands. Move around often so avoid dead limbs, and more importantly to avoid the possibility of blood clots (been there, done that, spent a month in the hospital!)

Have a fabulous time in Australia!
