CONTEST ALERT: John Frieda Hair Makeover!

We all love to experiment with and style our hair; and the damage we inflict is often severe. Blow dryers, flat irons, curling irons are tools that we use everyday without giving it a second thought. Now, thanks to the John Frieda® Full Repair Collection, you can continue to use the tools you love without risking more damage to your hair!

This salon-inspired collection specifically addresses an issue stylists are seeing with increasing frequency: short, broken hairs, flyaways and damaged ends caused by constant styling. John Frieda® developed the collection to repair damage due to heat styling and coloring, instantly transforming parched, damaged hair into smooth style with body and bounce.

“So many women who come into the salon have absolutely destroyed their hair by over-styling, over-coloring, and

generally overdoing it,” explains Harry Josh, John Frieda®

International Creative Consultant. “They traumatize their hair

trying to get a certain look, but then they can’t maximize it because their hair is so fried. Full Repair™ offers them damage control that won’t weigh their hair down, letting them style to the limit while actually reversing the damage they’ve done to date.”

Now, John Frieda® and SELF Magazine have joined forces to offer an amazing opportunity. You can have the chance to win a hair makeover from John Frieda’s star stylist, Harry Josh… in NYC!

Go to to tell us how you damage your hair and to upload a picture of your damaged ‘do.

Plus, be one of the first 1,000 people to enter and you’ll receive a FREE John Frieda® product!

BUYERS BEWARE-What beauty products/activities do you need to keep an "eye" out for?

Buyers Beware! When it comes to eye makeup selection, what do you consider? Color? Brand? Packaging? But are you reading the most important part of the package? What other common products/activities do you need to keep an “eye” out for?

Founder and President of EnvyDerm Cosmetics, Nadia Smith has provided the top 5 things to avoid that cause harm to your eyes, lashes and brows.

5. Avoid Makeup in Motion

Though it seems ideal for those on the run, avoid makeup application in a car, train or bus. A sudden halt, bump or drop, may leave you with a serious injury. Whether applying mascara or eyeliner, manage to find some time in your morning routine to apply makeup in the home or office. Even a slight scratch in your eye can lead to a more serious problem down the line.

4. Don’t Share

Avoid sharing or exchanging your eye products with anyone! This could easily lead to an infection. When sampling at a cosmetics/retail store apply eye makeup with single-use applicator. If you need to test an eye shadow, test it on the back of your hand instead of your eye.

3. DIY Disaster

There are many DIY kits for lash extensions and lash/brow tinting available for purchase. When it comes to lash extensions chose the product wisely. The glue used may be harmful to your eyes and/or lead to pulling out your lashes and causing irritation when removed. Make sure there is no formaldehyde or cyano acrylate in the glue used. Though it sounds convenient to test products in the comfort of your own home, my advice is to avoid lash and brow dyeing/tinting. Eyelash and brow tinting may cause stinging and watery eyes, or worse— an allergic reaction. Though it is not recommended, if you plan to give it a try, be sure to test the dye on your skin prior to applying it to the eyes or brows. I recommend using a shadow to darken the color of your brows instead.

2. Infected Makeup

To avoid infections, discard and replace your eye makeup regularly. Mascara should be changed every three months. Sharpen your eye pencil before every application, to avoid both scratching your eye and to keep it clean. If you wear contact lenses, be sure to change your products more frequently. If you have had an eye infection, discard any eye cosmetics used and refresh your supplies.

1. Harmful Chemicals

Always read the ingredients on the packaging of any products you purchase. Do your research! Whether purchasing mascara or eye makeup remover, make sure all ingredients used are safe. Phthalate, sulfate, Propylene Glycol and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate are just a few of the harmful ingredients that could be in your cosmetics bag. As mentioned, I would recommend sticking to products with natural ingredients like EnvyDerm Eyelash Growth Serum, a gentle, clinically-tested non-prescription formula that promotes natural eyelash growth (

Tips for Compact Packing for Summer Getaways!

Summer is here to stay, which means the time we have all been waiting for has finally arrived- the chance to embark on endless beach getaways! Designer Danielle Ribner’s love for travel is apparent in her Loup Summer 2011 collection, consisting of compact, wrinkle-free, and sweat resistant garments, easily mixed and matched to create versatile ensembles.

Danielle Ribner offers advice on the most efficient (and fashionable!) way to pack for summer vacations:

  1. A short, easy "day to night" dress - I find it simplifies everything when packing. Opt for a dress you can put on for the beach or a daytime stroll, then can throw a jacket over and wear out to dinner.
  2. Lightweight solid tees - whether you're going some place rugged or relaxing, basics can always be dressed up with accessories. They take up little room in your bag and offer more coverage when you need a little escape from the sun.
  3. High waisted skirts - I love buying local t-shirts when traveling, and I always end up wearing them tucked into my high waisted skirts to make them less "tourist" and more like a fashion statement.
  4. Tote bag - I couldn't live without a tote bag on summer vacations. I carry them as a purse and they work for everything from a hike to a night out.

The Summer 2011 collection of lightweight and modern-fitting dresses, adorable tanks and tees, and trendy skirts and pants includes on-trend ruffles, pleats, and bold colors. Danielle says, “Loup garments are first and foremost made to be easy to wear and comfortable all day long. They are inspired by the notion that a girl should be able to throw her on clothes wherever she is, and not have to think about them for the rest of the day, while of course always looking great. The fabrics are always easy to care for and breathable, and the designs come from a place of embracing femininity and being active.”

Retailing for $55.00-$105.00, the Summer 2011 collection is available online at and at athletic wear stores, resorts, pro shops nationwide, and contemporary boutiques.

Take the Flavor Over Fizz Challenge With Crystal Light

Summer is finally here and with the temps climbing higher every day it's just a matter of time before they hit the triple digits. Good thing I took the Crystal Light Flavor Over Fizz Challenge and found the perfect way to quench my thirst this summer!

Crystal Light is challenging women everywhere to give up soda for the summer and drink Crystal Light instead. Since I've been planning on giving up diet soda for quite some time now I was ready to jump on board. I received several packets of Crystal Light, all in different yummy flavors: Lemonade, Raspberry Green Tea, Strawberry Kiwi, Lemon Iced Tea and my personal fave Peach Iced Tea. Just tear open the packet and pour it into 16 oz of water, shake it up and enjoy! These little packets are ideal for tossing into your handbag or even tucking into your jeans pocket for on-the-go refreshment.

And speaking of refreshment, there is nothing like a tall glass of Peach Iced Tea with sliced lemon and orange for a little added kick. With so many choices of fresh fruit at the local farmer's market I have been adding berries, cherries, lemon and lime to dress up my drink! With so many different flavors of Crystal Light the flavor possibilities are endless. And for those meltingly hot days, Crystal Light over crushed ice is absolute perfection!

So join me in taking the Crystal Light Flavor Over Fizz Challenge - ditch the soda the summer and get refreshed with Crystal Light!

Style Tips to Beat The Heat from The Bottomless Closet NYC

Balancing the scorching summer heat and frigid air-conditioned offices makes dressing appropriately for summer quite the challenge. Stress no more, as Bottomless Closet NYC is here to offer tips on maintaining a professional image for the workplace (while staying cool!). After all, the local non-profit organization provides disadvantaged women with business professional clothing, career skills and image coaching, and has been helping women get fashioned to get back into the workforce for over ten years.

The Bottomless Closet “Fashion Force”, a group of dedicated volunteers with a fashion based background, offers do’s and don’ts for acing summer office attire:
  • Show off with color, not skin! Embrace summer by choosing bold pieces, such as a floral print skirt or a bright-colored belt.
  • Dress in layers. Keep a lightweight blazer or cardigan handy to throw on in case your office blasts the air-conditioning.
  • Give your skinny jeans a rest. Wear pants that sport a wider cuff, such as flared dark jeans or long trousers.
  • Choose loose-fitting dresses that you can breathe in. Make sure they’re long enough to bend over comfortably.
  • Save revealing clothing such as tube tops or strapless dresses for the beach!
  • Keep your nails professional too! Wear a neutral color like ballet slippers when getting your manicure and pedicure.
  • Wear white pants! But be sure to wear nude undergarments.

  • Flip-flops are best for the pool, not for work. Instead, find comfort in gladiator sandals or wedges.
  • Steer clear from sheer clothing. Do not wear linen or chiffon fabrics without appropriate undergarments.
  • Don’t be afraid to wear clothing that will keep you cool in the summer. But make sure that bra straps are not visible under strappy tanks or dresses.
  • Don’t be too flashy with your accessories. Stick to simple and traditional pieces such as pearls or stud earrings.

When taking these tips into consideration, keep in mind that every work environment has individualized dress codes or cultures that dictate what is/is not appropriate. When in doubt, it is better to be safe than sorry and take the conservative route.
